Miami-Dade Police Department: Address, Phone Number, Districts and County

The Miami-Dade Police Department, formerly known as MDPD, is now officially called the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, or MDSO. The change took effect in January 2025 when Florida’s constitutional requirements restored an elected sheriff as the county’s chief law-enforcement officer.

The agency continues to provide patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement, emergency response and community-policing services across unincorporated Miami-Dade County. It also provides contracted police services to several municipalities. Residents should call 911 during an emergency and use the countywide non-emergency number for situations that do not require an immediate response.

Areas Served by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office

MDSO primarily serves the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade County. It also provides police services under contract to Cutler Bay, Miami Lakes and Palmetto Bay.

The Sheriff’s Office should not be confused with the City of Miami Police Department. The City of Miami, Miami Beach, Hialeah, Coral Gables, Doral, Homestead and several other incorporated municipalities operate their own police departments.

A property may use “Miami” as its mailing address without being inside the City of Miami. The exact location determines whether the responding agency will be MDSO, the City of Miami Police Department or another municipal agency.

During an emergency, call 911. Dispatchers can determine the responsible department and transfer or route the call when necessary.

Main Divisions and Specialized Units

MDSO patrol operations are divided between North Operations, South Operations and Strategic Response.

North Operations supervises the Intracoastal, Northside, Northwest, Midwest and Miami Lakes districts. South Operations oversees the Hammocks, Kendall, South, Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay districts.

Strategic Response includes police services at Miami International Airport, PortMiami, county government facilities and special events. Other specialized units investigate:

  • Homicides
  • Robberies
  • Sexual offences
  • Child abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Cybercrime
  • Organized crime
  • Narcotics
  • Warrants and fugitives
  • Public corruption
  • Homeland-security threats
  • Environmental and agricultural crimes

The Sheriff’s Office also operates forensic, crime-scene, records, training, communications, evidence and community-affairs units.

How to File a Miami-Dade Police Report Online

MDSO provides an online reporting system for selected non-emergency incidents. The incident must have happened in an unincorporated part of Miami-Dade County or in Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay or Miami Lakes.

Online-report categories include:

  • Lost property
  • Theft
  • Vehicle burglary
  • Burglary of an unlocked garage, shed or storage area
  • Criminal mischief or vandalism
  • Harassing telephone calls
  • Verbal threats
  • Certain civil landlord-and-tenant disputes

Online reporting cannot be used when:

  • A suspect is known.
  • Someone was injured.
  • A weapon was involved.
  • The incident occurred on Miami-Dade County Public Schools property.
  • It happened on a state or federal highway.
  • The reporting person is younger than 18.
  • Immediate evidence collection is required.

The person submitting the report must have a valid email address. After submission, the report is reviewed, and the reporting person can print a copy without charge.
