Michigan Attorney General: Office, Phone Number, How to Contact & File a Complaint

The most valuable document in a Michigan consumer dispute may be the confirmation number received immediately after filing. The Attorney General’s online system assigns a file number, but review and contact with a business can take considerably longer. Keeping that number and copies of the submission makes follow-up easier.

Michigan’s Consumer Protection Team handles reports of deceptive business practices and may try informal mediation. The state also warns that some submitted material can become a public record, making thoughtful preparation just as important as submitting the complaint itself.

Michigan Attorney General

Who Is the Current Attorney General of Michigan?

As of October 15, 2026, Dana Nessel is the Attorney General of Michigan. She first took office in January 2019 and leads the Michigan Department of Attorney General.

Her office represents the state’s interests and pursues consumer-protection enforcement, among other duties. The Consumer Protection Team seeks voluntary solutions to certain disputes but cannot prosecute a consumer’s personal civil claim as that person’s attorney.

How to File a Complaint With the Michigan Attorney General

Michigan asks people to check its complaint directory first. Some automotive, insurance, banking and other regulated matters are handled by different agencies.

Step 1: Open Michigan’s complaint information and directory

Visit https://www.michigan.gov/consumerprotection/complaints. Review the Complaint Directory to confirm that the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team is responsible for the problem. Specialized forms are also available for issues such as elder abuse, Medicaid fraud, and illegal robocalls.

Step 2: Choose the consumer complaint form

Select Consumer Complaint on the official site to open the electronic filing system, or download its print version if mailing a complaint. The consumer form is for business conduct, not a general request to send a message to the attorney general.

Step 3: Organize the evidence and explain the disputed conduct

Record the business’s name and contact details, what you bought or agreed to, the date, amount, any invoice or contract terms, and what the business said when you complained directly. Attach relevant copies of contracts, receipts, correspondence and payment records. Keep all originals for your own records.

Step 4: Review Michigan’s public-record and privacy notice

Michigan warns that complaint materials may be disclosed under the state’s Freedom of Information Act and may be sent to the business or another agency. Avoid unnecessary Social Security and account numbers. If sensitive records must be included, the office says to use mail rather than sending them by email.

Step 5: Submit and save the assigned file number

After online submission, Michigan displays a confirmation screen with an Attorney General file number. Save the number and a copy of the complaint. Paper materials can be sent to Consumer Protection Team, P.O. Box 30213, Lansing, MI 48909, or faxed to (517) 241-3771.

What Happens After You File a Complaint?

Michigan says its Consumer Protection Team receives thousands of complaints and complete processing may take several weeks. In an eligible mediation case, staff send the business a letter, along with the complaint and attachments, asking for its response. If the business replies, the state then contacts the complainant in writing.

If there is no business response within 30 days, the office says it contacts the business again. If the company still refuses to cooperate, the state will notify the consumer in writing. At that point, a private lawsuit or small claims case may be an option. Informal mediation does not guarantee that a business will respond or pay, and the Attorney General cannot act as private counsel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will I receive a case number right away?

For an online consumer complaint, yes. Michigan says its submission confirmation screen shows an assigned Attorney General file number, even though processing may take several more weeks.

Q. What does Michigan do if a business ignores the complaint?

The Consumer Protection Team says it follows up after 30 days without a reply. If the company will not cooperate, the office notifies the consumer in writing.

Q. Can anyone request a copy of my complaint under FOIA?

Some submitted materials can be disclosed as public records under Michigan law, subject to applicable exemptions. Remove unnecessary confidential identifiers before submitting.

Q. Is an auto repair complaint always handled by the Attorney General?

No. Michigan directs many auto repair and dealer matters to the Secretary of State. Check the complaint directory first so your materials reach the correct regulator.
